Lacey and Larkin annoyed by Arpaio’s pardon

Joe Arpaio was behind the arrest of Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, two journalists and founders of media outlets. They owned Village Voice Media and Phoenix New Times. The two journalist used the media stations to reveal the rogue actions of Joe Arpaio when he was the Sheriff of Maricopa County.

Arpaio was accused by the two of leading a campaign of eliminating immigrants in the county. As the Sheriff, he would order his agents to go round the county looking for anyone who did not have the necessary documentation to allow them to live in the United States.

Joe Arpaio seemed to have bile with the immigrants since he saw them as a treat to the native. He is one of the Americans who think that by allowing immigrants into the county, there would be much pressure on the available resources. So, the solution was to stop them from coming into the county through all means possible.

One way of sending the signal to the immigrants was by arresting those who had already moved into the United States and placing them under inhumane conditions. Joe Arpaio conducted himself in a way that showed recklessness to the right of the immigrants.

It is not a crime to be an immigrant, and if there are any issues to be resolved about immigration, then they deserve to be done in the right manner. An immigrant is not a criminal and does not deserve to be treated like a terrorist. Read more: Michael Lacey | Crunchbase and Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund

Joe Arpaio was making life unbearable for the immigrants by opening up concentration camps where they would be held before deportation. The conditions in the concentration camps were very bad. It was almost inhabitable.

Arpaio however, did not see anything wrong with that. To him, as long as immigrants were not given an opportunity to live in the county, al was good. One of the most infamous concentration camps was Tent City. These are camps which would be built horrendously since Joe Arpaio used to channel money meant for proper jails to other causes.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin gave Joe Arpaio wide coverage in their media. They revealed the concentration camps he was secretly running as well as the torture that immigrants including children and women were going through in these facilities.

After the exposure done by Michael and Jim Larkin, there was public pressure on the department of justice to take action against the Sheriff. In 2011, he was taken to court and charged with allowing discrimination of immigrants.

The courts found him guilty but ordered him to stop any harassment of immigrants. Joe Arpaio did not take the orders. Together with his officers, they went ahead with their normal activities of profiling immigrants. In 2017, he was back in courts again. This time he was found guilty and was to be sentenced. This, however, did not happen because there was a new president in office who supported the actions he took. President Trump pardoned him a few months to his sentencing marking the end of the case against Joe Arpaio.

The victims of his actions have been denied justice, but Lacey and Larkin are willing to continue pushing for better treatment of immigrants and minorities in Arizona.
